Most people know that pumping oil down the drain is illegal and can land you in hot water.
What you may not be aware of is the damage that it causes. The damage happens EVERY TIME oil is poured down the drain, but most people don’t realise because the effects are cumulative.
Cooking oil mixes with sewage and all sorts of contaminants in the drains which slowly rots the drain, eventually causing it to block or even collapse. The oil mixes with all this revolting stuff and causes something known as a “Fat Berg”. It’s like an ice berg, but made of fat. And it lives in the sewers.
The largest one found was 15 tonnes and that was under a city area with a high density of restaurants.
